Property owners are being warned about a rise in green home improvement scams across the country.

Many local authorities and Propertymark, the trade body for estate agents, warn that rogue traders are exploiting anxiety about high energy prices and confusion over green grants.

The scammers tend to cold call, offering exterior wall and roof coating products which they โ€˜guaranteeโ€™ will cure damp and dramatically cut energy costs.

Unfortunately, the work doesnโ€™t live up to these promises.

The scammers may also falsely claim that they work with the local council.

Disclaimer: Weโ€™re not saying everyoneโ€™s a bad guy. But always check a tradesperson is honest and reliable.

  • ย Be wary if youโ€™re pressured to commit to work on the spot.
  • Check a companyโ€™s online presence and read reviews.
  • If someone claims to work for the council, verify this with the local authority yourself.
  • Always get three written quotes.
  • Pay in agreed stages and, if possible, use a credit card (this offers the best protection).
